Digital Scales or Analog Scales. Is there a clear winner?

This should be really easy right, all I needed was a scale. I was never prepared for what I was about to see. I was introduced to a world of digital scales with bells and whistles. All of a sudden scales came with fancy designs, matching apps, body fat percentage calculator, WiFi, and Bluetooth connectivity and more.

After spending what felt like eons in the store I made a purchase. A brand new digital scale with some extra bells and whistles was now mine.

My beloved new digital scale is home

I couldn’t wait to test out my new scale. After taking it out of the box, inserting a battery I placed it in a corner in my bathroom and weighed. I then set it up with all the options it needs to give me my BMI such as my gender and height.

Shortly after the purchase of the digital scale, I got married and my home needed to be rearranged to accommodate my growing family. The scale ended up underneath my bed as I made room for more important objects that needed to be in plain sight. This, as it turns out was the worst thing to do with a digital scale.

Is my scale lying to me?

Eventually, I realized the scale was wildly inconsistent. In the span of 5 minutes, I managed to lose 5 pounds. If only I was that lucky. This continued for a couple of years until the scale needed new batteries. Rather than replacing the batteries, I decided to do some research and replace the scale. I had even decided to go back to an analog scale because I was unhappy with my previous purchase.

Trying to find a scale where everyone agreed that the readings were accurate seemed impossible. I eventually got that is highly rated overall without placing too much emphasis on the negative feedback.

Shopping for a new scale yet again

After going back and forth between analog scale choices and digital ones I bought another digital scale, one without the bells and whistles. This time I decided to read the little manual that came with the scale. A notable warning that was written in the manual is that you should never move a digital scale before weighing unless it’s re-calibrated.

The light bulb went off. The previous digital scale I bought spent most of its life underneath my bed. I had to move the scale every time it was being used and so my reading was never accurate. The persistent inaccuracies were a direct result of me not reading the instructions. As it turns out all digital scales are like this.

So are digital scales better then?

So are digital scales better than analog scales then? Quite honestly now that I am correctly using my digital scale I haven’t noticed any inaccuracies in it. Our weight does fluctuate during the day as you are typically lighter in the morning and heavier as the day goes on. So if you compare your weight during different times of the day you might come to the conclusion that your scale is inaccurate.

My analog scale worked well when I had it and my digital scale is now working well too. As long as you don’t move the scale around before you step on it you should be fine. Unless of course, the scale is defective. So take your pick and go with whichever you prefer. Just be sure to read the little book that comes with your new purchase. It has useful information, who knew!
